Iran has lauded Qatar for its efforts to honour the Islamic values at the FIFA World Cup games being hosted by the Arab country. Ebrahim Raisi, the President of Iran congratulated the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani during a telephonic conversation.
During the telephone conversation with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on Monday, Raisi congratulated Qatar for successfully hosting the FIFA World Cup. Raisi praised the efforts of Qatar for respecting the Islamic values at the global event.
Ebrahim Raisi also discussed the development of Tehran-Doha political, economic, social and cultural relationship. The Iranian president called for the follow-up of the previous agreements until the desired results are reached.
The official website of the Iranian President Raisi reported that the emir of Qatar has called his country’s relations with Iran friendly, brotherly and long-standing. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is quoted to have said that, “We are looking for the development of these strategic relations.”
According to the Iranian media, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani also emphasized the need to implement the agreements made between Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
International media is criticising the Qatar for upholding its religious values at the global football event. Restriction regarding the sale of liquor, LGBT related issues and dress codes on the visiting spectators is being dubbed as a religious hegemony. Though, the Qatar has spent more than 220 billion Dollars on the event, the most in the history of football world cup.
In 2017, the finance minister of Qatar had claimed that his country was spending $500 million per week on infrastructure projects. This included the expenditure on new roads, hotels, stadiums and airport upgrades to prepare the small Middle Eastern nation to host the world’s largest sporting event.
